There was a time when durians were seasonal.

A display such as in the painting was only when the king of the fruits was in season.

Durian lovers are always drawn by the sweet or pungent scent that pervades the air even at a distance from the stall. 

They would be out hunting for a rewarding bargain. It was never cheap. But the inference though mentioned jokingly was that people were prepared to pawn their sarongs for a treat.

I have added some pigeons stalked by a cat to make the painting more interesting.
