The Ship
This is one of the two paintings from my private collections. ‘The Ship’ is my first oil painting done on a white cloth in 1967.
This was an example of self-taught painting techniques. No one told me that I should use a canvas for oil painting which would come mounted on a frame, or on a flat board. The painting surface would also have been primed with acrylic gesso.
The picture is that of the 18,000-ton oil tanker SS San Felipe in which I sailed as an engineer from 1962 to 1964. It therefore holds special memory for me.
The painting although done on a cloth is well preserved by the oil paint. It still looks good after more than 50 years.
