Shuttle
The boat was ferrying workers to and from work in manning the bum boats.
The shuttle boat ride was perhaps the only time when workers relaxed, read newspaper or story books, or just lazing on the deck.
Those were the days when mobile phone was not yet invented. People communicated in short wave radio sets, but only during emergencies.
Pager devices were a couple of years away, but then you were given to carry one only if your status was of importance, and your presence where needed was essential.
